The LED tube suppliers want to build a new light world; they take effort to do their jobs. No matter how hard the work is, they insistent to do it well. They are facing new challenge with the light market. Later I will talk about the characters of LEDs. LEDs are 100% recyclable. Unlike fluorescent counterparts and high intensity discharge (HID) technologies, LEDs contain no toxic materials, hazardous mercury, or halogen gases. LEDs emit no ultraviolet (UV) rays or infrared (IR) radiation. Unlike compact fluorescents, LEDs, including LED T8 tube lighting, do not require a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or hazardous waste disposal. Retrofitting to LEDs creates energy efficiencies, reducing our carbon footprint-the impact of human activities regarding the amount of greenhouse gases produced.
Light-emitting diodes, known as LED’s, are an enticing option for those seeking to reduce their lighting costs. They’ve come a long way in just over one hundred years when British experimenter H. J. Round thought there was no practical use for his invention. However, in 1962, together with the General Electric Company, Nick Holon yak Jr. found visible spectrum LED’s extremely practical in electronics applications, winning awards for his research applying LED to industry.
Versatility and durability bring LED lighting to the forefront in the 21st century. Improved chip structures and manufacturing processes in the last year have exploded the use of LEDs in business and industry,take LED T8 tube lighting and LED Down light for example. As technology advances, LEDs will represent the most significant development in lighting and thus create unique, low energy and environmentally friendly lighting solutions. Both in indoor and outdoor applications, LED manufactures are playing a vital role in lighting, for homes, shopping centers, parking lots, offices, restaurants, hotels, malls, buses etc.
Business Lighting Solutions (BLS) has reported that its LED-based Ecofluro T8 tubes have been used to replace more than 2100 fluorescent tubes at an Auckland, New Zealand facility that houses Air New Zealand’s engineering operations. Schneider Electric partnered with BLS on the solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit that Schneider projects will deliver greater than 50% energy savings. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED-based tubes has remained a popular concept due to the sheer number of such lamps installed globally. BLS sales director Paul Stoddert said, “Fluorescent bulbs, which are used by most New Zealand businesses, contribute to around 40% of the average office power bill so by replacing them with LEDs a business can literally halve this cost.” Still, LED-based retrofit lamps haven’t proven capable of producing the same level of light output that the latest fluorescent tubes produce according to numerous US Department of Energy (DOE) tests. In May 2011, the DOE published a detailed report of LED T8 tests in a typical office environment The results found the SSL products draw less power, but also provide less light on the task plane due in part to the fact that the directional LED sources aren’t a good match to the troffer fixtures designed for omnidirectional fluorescent tubes.
These 300 new LED-equipped junctions will save 600 tons of CO2 emissions a year and around £200,000 in energy costs. LED lamps will replace the existing bulbs at 3,500 traffic signal heads, each of which currently contain at least three bulbs.
This introduction of LED traffic lights is claimed to be the largest of its kind in the UK. Till is seeking to stimulate the development of LED traffic signals and to encourage more manufacturers to join the market.
It is expected that there will be a greater take-up across the UK as a result of TfL’s commitment to introducing the lights in large numbers.
The new lights are part of the Mayor’s efforts to reduce the Capital’s CO2 emissions by a total of 60 per cent by 2025.
The initiative follows the introduction of led t8 light at all London Buses roadside ticket machines and LED lighting at 3,500 solar powered bus stops (to provide illumination for the stop and signage) and 640 shelters – see News
If LED lights are installed in all of London’s 6,000 junctions which have traffic signals, CO2 emissions could be reduced by around 12,000 tons a year.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said “I’ve seen the future and it comprises these tip-top, energy-busting traffic lights. Installing these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London’s galaxy of traffic lights by over half, as well as saving money from energy bills.”
“We are pressing ahead to get many more of these illuminating orbs on to our streets to join a range of other energy-zapping measures already saving us money such as solar-powered bus stops and shelters.” [Editor’s note: yes folks, the Mayor of London really do talk like this!]
Till is leading the way with LED traffic light trials, which it hopes will pave the way for their wider introduction across the UK. LED product designs and costs have rapidly improved dramatically in recent years and initial barriers specific to the requirements of the UK market are being overcome ahead of the installation in London next year.
tall ran a small-scale trial of LED traffic lights in Croydon between January 2007 and August 2008. These trials demonstrated that a product suitable for the UK marketplace, with reduced power consumption and at a reasonable price was feasible.
Alan Bristow, Director of Traffic Operations, TfL said: ‘These new lights will not only cut CO2 emissions but they will also last about ten times longer than standard bulbs, meaning we will save on maintenance costs.
‘This is part of our efforts across tall to cut CO2 emissions. On top of introducing new hybrid buses to London’s streets, we are currently exploring new technologies including more efficient led Tube station and tunnel lighting.” LED T8 tube light can not only save the energy, but also bring the brightest view to people. When you see the title you maybe confused, don’t worry, later we will introduce this to you .The multi touch, as its name suggests, it refers to a new technology that the computer users can control the graphical interfaces with multi fingers at the same time, this technology is opposed to the single touch technology. And the single touch technology has emerged for a long time, as small as the touch-controlled mobile phone, or as big as the ATM cash point, all these are the equipments with the single touch technology. Since the inauguration of multi touch, the products with high technology bring us many surprises, this technology represents that our science and technology have advanced a big step forward.
Since the announcement of the iPhone, an especially large number of people have asked me about multi-touch. The reason is largely because they know that I have been involved in the topic for a number of years. The problem is, I can’t take the time to give a detailed reply to each question. So I have done the next best thing (I hope). That is, start compiling my would-be answer in this document. The assumption is that ultimately it is less work to give one reasonable answer than many unsatisfactory ones.
Multi-touch technologies have a long history. To put it in perspective, the original work undertaken by my team was done in 1984, the same year that the first Macintosh computer was released, and we were not the first. Furthermore, during the development of the iPhone, Apple was very much aware of the history of multi-touch, dating at least back to 1982, and the use of the pinch gesture, dating back to 1983. This is clearly demonstrated by the bibliography of the PhD thesis of Wayne Watermen, co-founder of FingerWorks, a company that Apple acquired early in 2005, and now an Apple employee:
In making this statement about their awareness of past work, I am not criticizing Watermen, the iPhone, or Apple. It is simply good practice and good scholarship to know the literature and do one’s homework when embarking on a new product. What I am pointing out, however, is that “new” technologies – like multi-touch – do not grow out of a vacuum. While marketing tends to like the “great invention” story, real innovation rarely works that way.

With the advent of LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL), companies and individuals can slash greenhouse-gas emissions while positively impacting the financial bottom line. Indeed, while LED lighting costs more than other technologies, savings in energy and maintenance costs more than cover the upfront premium. And with LED tube lamps dropping in price, SSL becomes more of a bargain every day.
The supposedly green, environmentally-friendly CFLs contain mercury, albeit a small amount. A fact sheet about CFLs from the US Environmental Protection Agency notes that, “Exposure to mercury, a toxic metal, can affect our brain, spinal cord, kidneys and liver, causing symptoms such as trembling hands, memory loss, and difficulty moving.” It goes on to add that, “Mercury is released into our environment when products with mercury are broken, disposed of improperly, or incinerated. If you break a CFL, clean it up safely.”
Many states, cities and counties have outlawed the disposal of CFLs in the trash. Does anyone actually believe that CFLs survive intact in a landfill after a bulldozer has compacted the load into place? This assumes, of course, that a CFL actually arrives at a landfill in one piece.
LED tube light, conversely, is poised to deliver on energy savings with a positive environmental impact. With LED tube light, businesses can reduce costs and not have to be concerned about proper disposal because the lights can be recycled.
Another obvious advantage of LED tube lamps is the long lifespan promoted by technology. With a minimum life of 50,000 hours, LED tube lamps last five times longer than their nearest competitors. When compared with incandescent lamps (average life of 2,000 hours) the disparity is even more remarkable. Given their solid-state circuitry, LED tube lamps are very durable. It takes a lot more than accidentally dropping or hitting an LED T8 tube light to render it inoperable.
One of the major advantages of LED tube lamps is that they can be placed in hard-to-reach locations that are sometimes accessible only with special lifts or scaffolding. Once in place, it will be years before these lights will need to be changed. Often, businesses wait until the number of burned-out light bulbs reaches critical mass before making replacements. And then, usually, all of the bulbs, including those that are still working, are replaced at the same time. The longevity aspect of LED tube lamps can save businesses thousands of dollars in maintenance costs, not to mention operating costs from reduced electricity usage.
The decrease in electricity usage can actually have a double benefit in some situations. LED tube lamps are often eligible for rebates and other cash incentives provided by governmental agencies and public utilities, thereby greatly reducing their cost of ownership. Another economic advantage of LED tube light for businesses is that due to their long lives, the initial cost can be capitalized on a company’s balance sheet and depreciated over a period of five to ten years. This is an important feature for publicly-traded companies because it can significantly decrease operating costs which, of course, increases reported net income.
The reduction in energy use has another benefit. For example, T8 LED Tube is the latest LED-based T8 tube in the ATG Electronics product lineup. It combines numerous practical and technical advantages in one product and is rightly considered the best solution on the market for the replacement of conventional fluorescent tubes. As less electricity must be produced, less coal must be burned in coal-fired power plants to supply that electricity. A significant amount of electricity produced in the United States comes from burning coal. This means that as less electricity is used, less coal is burned, and therefore less carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas), sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, and mercury are emitted to the environment.

Don’t misunderstand the meaning of interaction, the more important, don’t underrate the power of science and Multi touch technology. For example, you must have used the ATM cash point, while your hands are approaching the touchscreen, you are about to interact with this action. The next generation of electronic billboards — interactive displays fueled by customer movements — could enable chains to promote new category destinations in-store, deliver information that educates shoppers and, ultimately, drive sales.
Digital signage is gaining traction in the retail industry and continues to prove its worth. Approximately 155 million consumers – two-thirds of shoppers 18 and older – had seen a digital video display at various public venues (including retail stores) within the past month, according to a study conducted earlier this year by Columbia, Md.-based research firm Arbitron.
While retailers’ capital budgets remain strained, they are committed to digital signage as long as it meets a few criteria: it must be easy to use; capture consumer attention, especially from afar; and ensure that shoppers recognize and retain the message.
While this might seem like a pretty tall order, it doesn’t have to be, according to Vincent John Vincent, co-founder and president of GestureTek. “Digital signage should have a ‘wow’ factor that includes being engaging, supporting branding and most of all, promoting fun,” he says.
GestureTek, with worldwide headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., provides video-based gesture-recognition technology to capture user movements and then allow consumers to personally interface with three-dimensional multi-media content, access information and manipulate special effects by using their hands or full bodies.
An integrated projection camera system captures the gestures of consumers as they approach the touchscreen and projects them onto the signage, which can be on a wall, floor or store window. Armed with a wireless network connection, retailers can manage the program in-house or have GestureTek host it and regularly deliver content to the store.
One of GestureTek’s most popular options is “The Cube,” a turnkey, all-in-one unit standing 18 x 24 inches tall. The unit’s integrated camera and projector display dynamic multi-media games, imagery and special effects onto retail floor space. Besides being a great fit in small footprints (it projects a 4 x 5 ft. interactive display), the unit doesn’t require installation support; it can be up and running within minutes.
Driving shoppers, sales
The GestureTek system can help drive shoppers toward new categories or into “less shopped” areas of the store. For example, one specialty retailer complained that 70 percent of store traffic stopped within 20 ft. of the entrance. By adding an interactive floor in its flagship Times Square store, that chain “was able to move shoppers into other departments and drove sales,” Vincent says.
ScreenFX, a component of the company’s GestureFX System line, helps retailers turn store windows into electronic billboards that can advertise exclusive offers or services, including gift registries and loyalty programs. Windows can also be made “multi touch,” enabling groups of users to interact simultaneously with menu-based content.
“Retailers can also program these screens to be interactive and allow users to manipulate content by touching the screen,” Vincent says.
GestureTek also has commercialized solutions featuring stereo or 3-D cameras that “allow us to track the unique movements of people within a group from longer distances,” Vincent says.
The 3-D technology is being used in several Sprint stores and will also be used in interactive displays at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.
The scope of application of multi touch technology becomes more and more extensive, we can see the multi touch wall in the museum, in the gallery, in the cinema, in the subway and so on. This technology offers us too much convenience, when we use the screen of single touch technology, we have to touch one by one, and we have to return to the previous interface if we miss only one step, and with the multi touch technology, we can touch several courses in the same time. Many public places put the lighting design as the key project, indeed, the lighting has the crucial influence to the whole of a building, moreover, the lighting is the necessity both in people’s lives or works, all these determine the important position of lighting in the society. It’s not an easy task to arrange the lighting perfectly, maybe the designers should be with the aid of advanced technologies, such as LED. $720,000 in energy savings
In the Pasadena installation, the college is projecting annual energy savings of $720,000 and a carbon footprint reduction of 5 million pounds. “Not only will this save more than 55% of electrical consumption for lighting, but it saves in manufacturing resources and disposal costs and impacts,” said Richard van Pelt, CFO and assistant president of Pasadena City College. “We start saving money on the first day the LEDs are installed, so the payback is instantaneous.”
In total, the retrofit will include classrooms (such as the one pictured), offices, stairwells, parking structures, maintenance areas, and a gymnasium spread across 26 buildings. The project will be funded in part by an $850,000 rebate from the Pasadena Water Power utility.
“Integrating Seesmart LED lighting products into Pasadena City College’s infrastructure will not only save energy, it will bring cost-avoidance opportunities,” said Ray Sjolseth, President of Seesmart. “The long lifespan of our LED products obviates the need for frequent replacement of individual lamps. This minimizes maintenance costs and facility waste and means that on-staff labor will be available for other servicing needs.”
As we have covered previously, LED retrofit tubes have failed to match the performance of fluorescent tubes in some high-profile tests, including those conducted by the DOE. Lately, however, we have reported on positive case studies including one in an Air New Zealand facility using LED tubes from Business Lighting Solutions. Moreover the March 2012 issue of LEDs Magazine, due out shortly, has a case study about a San Diego, California restaurant called Hodad’s using SSL tubes from Duracell Lighting.
SSL linear fixtures
While makers of LED retrofit tubes have struggled prior to these recent positive case studies, luminaire makers selling SSL-based linear fixtures have continuously made news over the course of the last year. That was a trend that we highlighted in our coverage of Lightfair International 2011. And now Lithonia Lighting (part of Acuity Brands) has launched linear fixtures that deliver system efficacy in excess of 100 lm/W.
What Lithonia is referring to as the new 100+ LPW family includes 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K CCT fixtures. While in many cases higher efficacy is only available in cooler CCTs, the new Lithonia products in the VTLED line include a 4000K CCT product with 106-lm/W efficacy and a 3500K CCT product with 104-lm/W efficacy.
Higher efficacy is just one of several additional optional features available in the VTLED family of 2×4- and 1×4-ft fixtures. You can specify the fixtures to be color accurate within a 2.5-step MacAdams ellipse. And Lithonia is now offering L80 fixture life of 50,000 hours. The higher efficacy, L80 life and tighter color control are also options in the RTLED family of fixtures.
Philips Lighting, meanwhile, addresses the linear lighting form factor via a number of its brands, and Philips Ledalite has launched new 1×4- and 2×2-ft fixtures in the ArcForm family. The products feature efficacy as high as 91.2 lm/W and Philips is backing them with a 5-year warranty.
Moving to task light, Amerlux introduced the second generation of its Evoke recessed downlight family. The Evoked 2.9 G2 products achieve efficacy as high as 56 lm/W, and color rendering index (CRI) ranging from 82 to 90. The products are focused on high-end residential and retail applications and come with a 10-year warranty.
Accent and decorative luminaires
The success of LED T8 tube light penetrating the lighting market is certainly leading more players to the market and some of the new faces will be innovating in terms of form factor and concept, and perhaps leveraging their business relationships in other industries. For example, Energizer Household Lighting may not be a name you would expect to see involved with lighting, beyond battery-powered flashlights, but the company has a new line of accent and decorative lights.
For now, Energizer is offering battery- and AC-powered integrated luminaires in the Ambiana, Edge, and Glas SSL families that debuted at the International Home + Housewares show in Chicago, Illinois. But the company also said it will introduce a line of retrofit lamps for socket-based applications later in the year.
The achievements of LEDs are there for all to see, since the appearance of LEDs, people can use the energy efficiently and save money greatly, this is the benefit the LEDs bring to the individuals, but alleviating the global energy strain is the most important contribution of LEDs, and it’s also the really significance. Even though the results are amazing, however the LED tube suppliers are not content to stop there, they say there are too many variable factors in the market and in the feature, they must control their products and ensure them conform to the changes of times.

The good running of a company depends on one part of the reasons that the company should formulate a perfect strategy, but the product itself is the essential of a company, because the customers are the most important target group, and the customers choose the products according to their property and price, maybe the price could affected by the objective factor, such as economic crisis, but the property of a product can be controlled totally by people. Business Lighting Solutions (BLS) has reported that its LED-based Colure T8 tubes have been used to replace more than 2100 fluorescent tubes at an Auckland, New Zealand facility that houses Air New Zealand’s engineering operations. Schneider Electric partnered with BLS on the solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit that Schneider projects will deliver greater than 50% energy savings. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED-based tubes has remained a popular concept due to the sheer number of such lamps installed globally. BLS sales director Paul Stoddert said, “Fluorescent bulbs, which are used by most New Zealand businesses, contribute to around 40% of the average office power bill so by replacing them with LED a business can literally halve this cost.” Still, LED-based retrofit lamps haven’t proven capable of producing the same level of light output that the latest fluorescent tubes produce according to numerous US Department of Energy (DOE) tests. In May 2011, the DOE published a detailed report of LED T8 tests in a typical office environment. The results found the SSL products draw less power, but also provide less light on the task plane due in part to the fact that the directional LED sources aren’t a good match to the troffer fixtures designed for unidirectional fluorescent tubes. Photometric data BLS published photometric data <http://www.businesslightingsolutions.com/ecofluro_t8_led_photometrics_study_1200mm_tube_only.htm> on its website that would indicate the Colure tubes produce greater light output than do the products that the DOE has tested. The summary test data on the company’s website is ambiguous, but the detailed report states that a single tube produces 2032 lm. That value is calculated based on intensity measured at 5° increments around the lamp. The LED t8 replacement lamps tested in the DOE study produced 1366 to 1539 lm.
The DOE report concluded that T8s would be a viable retrofit choice in applications where an area was over lit. When asked about the relative lighting before and after the New Zealand retrofit, BLS design and technology director Chris Wheatley said “The light projected on the working plane is +/- 2-5% depending on the color temperature and type of fitting.”
BLS is also reporting significantly higher efficacy than DOE tests have documented. The photometric documents on the company’s website indicate a lamp efficacy that’s 100 lm/W and system efficacy near that value with some fixtures. Looks at the DOE reports show a maximum bare-lamp efficacy of 93 lm/W with significantly-lower system efficacy.
When asked if the DOE had tested BLS products, Wheatley said, “No, to our knowledge they only tested American products and we were not involved. The efficacy of the products tested that I saw whereas we are achieving closer .Again this is referenced in the NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia) accredited photometric reports provided.”
LED America T8s
BLS isn’t the only LED T8 maker specifying better light output and efficacy than DOE test have revealed. For example, led tubes America claims that its SSL T8 tubes deliver 1400 directional lumens while consuming only 14.6W. That’s close to 100 lm/W efficacy. LEDs America and its sales and distribution partner Viper Networks have announced increased production of the LED-O products over the next two quarters.
